1954-55

Central Illinois in the 1950’s.  Made from 8 mm films taken by Raymond Vecchie of Taylorville, IL, this video covers steam on the Chicago & Illinois Midland including the last scheduled passenger run.  Steam on the CB&Q, NKP, NYC & IC is also shown together with 1st generation diesels on the Wabash, NYC, MP, Alton & Southern, CRIP and others.  It winds up with coverage on the Illinois Terminal R.R.  About 100 minutes.

Chicago Elevated.  This video provides a very detailed look at the elevated platform and platform structure at LaSalle & Van Buren, continuing with detailed coverage of the structure from that point eastward to Dearborn & Van Buren.  Filmed privately on 07/19/1994 apparently in conjuction with the freight tunnel video.  May be the only copy.  About 55 minutes.

1994

Chicago Freight Tunnels.  This was filmed during a private inspection on 07/19/1994, a little more than 2 years after the freight tunnels were accidentally flooded on 04/13/1992.  Starting under 327 S. LaSalle St., the video takes us north under LaSalle St., comes back, goes east under Van Buren St. to Clark St. then north under Clark St. to Jackson Blvd and winds up looking west under Jackson.  Privately filmed; this may be the only copy.  About 30 minutes.

1993

C&NW – Mainline West.   This two-tape video set covers the east-west main line from Chicago to Omaha and Fremont along with a “side trip” to Rockford.  It was taken during the 1993 flood and shows the California Zephyr detouring over the C&NW with Metra E-units leading the train.  Covers 3 complete divisions in 3 states and includes scenes showing 10 other railroads.  Greg Scholl, 150 minutes.

Chicago Steam Celebration.   The NRHS 1993 Convention, in Chicago, gathered famous locomotives from great distances and treated convention-goers to thrilling excursions and tours of historic locales.  Includes the UP 3985 and NKP 587 & 765 plus scenes at the Illinois Railway Museum, Metra F units and special trains on the South Shore and CTA.  Pentrax, 2 hours.

Cliffhanger.  Starring Sylvester Stallone; a botched mid-air heist results in suitcases full of cash being searched for by various groups throughout the Rocky Mountains.  Not a rail video, but was discovered in with the others.  In its original cellophane wrapping and never viewed.  Columbia Tristar.  112 minutes.

Forty Feet Below.  Explore the railroad tunnel system beneath the city of Chicago through this collection of film, video, and photographs.  Footage shot in the 1920s shows the trains in operation as they haul coal and merchandise along this rail system beneath the streets above.  Includes footage of the 1992 Chicago flood.  Pentrax, 30 minutes.

1992

The Green Bay Route.   Railroads powered entirely by Alco diesel locomotives are few in number.  The Green Bay & Western Railroad had a total of sixteen operating Alcos when this show was filmed in 1992, GB&W's last full year of operation as an independent company.  The railroad had an affinity for Alcos since diesels first replaced steam locomotives, keeping them well maintained and looking great in their deep red paint scheme.  Pentrax, 72 minutes.

1997

Iowa & Minnesota Rail Link.  Early days on the I&MRL including the last day for the Canadian Pacific on 04/04/97 and the I&MRL’s first day – 04/05/1997 followed by coverage from that date into November 1997.  The I&MRL became the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern on 07/29/2002.  Filmed by a railroad enthusiast and runs for 150 minutes.

Last of the Giants.   Union Pacific Big Boy locomotives filmed in the middle to late 1950’s.   Measuring 132 feet long and weighing one and one-quarter million pounds, these locomotives appropriately named.  Pentrax, 25 minutes.

1997

Mariners in Hard Hats.  Documents the construction of the Southern Pacific line over the Great Salt Lake that replaced the trestle portions of the 1904 Lucin Cut-Off with a dry land causeway.  The work was done by the Morrison-Knudsen Corp between 1956 and 1959.  Pentrax, 30 minutes.

1992

New Haven Mainlines.  Included is a 10 minute Black and White section of rare NH steam in the 1940s.  The balance is color and features 1950s era material.  A variety of locations along the New York to Boston Shore Line includes such places as: Shore Line Junction, Air Line Junction, Mill River Junction, Woodmont, Devon, Burr Road, Green's Farms, and several locations around the Bridgeport area.  Greg Scholl, 65 minutes.

1990

New Haven Railroad in the 1950’s.  Kent Cochrane, a navy cinematographer, set out in the 1950’s to chronicle the New Haven Railroad and did an excellent job.  This video was produced from Kent’s 16 mm films that were made available by the late Tom McNamara.  Included are the RDC cars, and a variety of other power including electrics, Alcos RS-3’s & FA’s, General Motors FL-9’s and others plus the last New Haven steam engine 2-8-2 number 3016 making its final trip in 1953.  Greg Scholl, 60 minutes.

1993

New York Central – An Insider’s View.  The New York Central of the 1940s was a first-class railroad, with a never-ending parade of freight and passenger trains traveling over the well-maintained tracks of the Water Level Route. Steam was king as World War II began and into this world came Fred Beach. Hired in 1941, Fred went trackside between 1941 and 1954 to record the many activities of this great railroad.  This video is taken from Fred’s reels, and includes rare footage never before seen by the public.  Pentrax, 50 minutes.

Rails of the 1950’s. 1960’s & 1970’s.  Made from 8 mm films taken by Don Goshert of Sterling, IL and covers numerous roads in the 1950’s and 1960’s with emphasis on the C&NW where Don worked as a locomotive engineer.  These include the PRR, B&O, CB&Q, RF&P, IC, C&O, NYC, NKP & others.  A commercial B&O film is included.  Also an interurban section featuring Dallas street cars, CTA, CA&E, Milwaukee Transport & others.  The video winds up with some 1991 shots at the Mid-Continent R.R. Museum at North Freedom, WI.  Some of the early film did not transfer too well.  About 80 minutes.

Red Signals.  A 1927 silent, black and white film starring the Santa Fe Railroad with rare footage of steam locomotives, railroad yards and steam in action.  Video Rails, 54 minutes.

Runaway Train.  A hardened convict and a younger prisoner escape from a brutal prison in the middle of winter only to find themselves on an out-of-control train with a female railway worker while being pursued by the vengeful head of security.  110 minutes.  Recorded from television.

1991

Santa Fe 3759.  Santa Fe’s last run of a steam engine over Cajon Pass took place on February 6, 1955 with the 3759 on the head end.  This excursion, from Los Angeles to Barstow and return, was dubbed “Farewell to Steam.”  Filmed by J. Allen Hawkins.  Video Rails, 60 minutes.

1991

Southern Pacific 4274.  One of railroading's most spectacular runs took place over the weekend of November 30, 1957 when Southern Pacific Cab Forward 4274 left Sacramento for its final journey across Donner Pass.  This historic event was captured on film by Albert C. Phelps, with special photography by J. Allen Hawkins and Jacob DeVries.  Video Rails, 60 minutes.
